ProtoType8: Seven Squares

A beautiful handmade piece with a diamond pattern made from Store.Alaudae.JP's original Foru-ami. Two pieces of material measuring 15mm wide x 27m long are used to weave the Body Parts and Handle Parts. Here, we will explain how to make the Body Parts in a detailed step-by-step manner so that even beginners can easily make them.
This knitting pattern provides detailed instructions, both visual and textual, for creating your project. Please download the diagram to your computer or smartphone and print it on paper of your choice. By referring to the pattern step by step, you can create your project more smoothly.

Bottom surface finishing

Bottom Finish
Once you’ve finished knitting the bottom section, the main body of your work will be complete.
Knitting Sequence
The knitting sequence is as follows: first the four corners, then the two sides, and finally the entire center. While it's difficult to explain the details of each square using only words, I've prepared visual materials for your reference.
Visual Materials
I've carefully selected over 120 images taken during the creation of this piece, focusing on the key points to make them easy to understand. In these images, you'll find:
The material to be inserted next: Clearly marked with a paper clip
Areas where only insertion was performed: If there is no length instruction, it is one square.
Where to cut off excess length: The placement of scissors is shown in relation to the square
Where to pass the band: The material is shown curving upwards
These visual aids are designed to help you visualize the process.
Image Editing
Since the images were taken by an amateur, some may be blurry. However, I've edited the important parts to ensure they are clear and usable.
Slide Display
These images have been organized into a slideshow, allowing you to follow the knitting process one step at a time.
Additional Notes
As you reach the bottom section, the material becomes shorter and harder to pull. Once you see the end of the material, using needle-nose pliers can make it easier to pull. Be careful not to damage the surrounding area when using pliers.
Summary
These instructions provide a basic guide. Feel free to adapt them based on your own ideas. Ultimately, the goal is to find a knitting method that you enjoy.

Regarding the current state of leftover materials

Amount of leftover material
The image of the leftover materials you're currently viewing is based on the knitting pattern used two years ago for an earlier version of this piece. Due to uncertainties about the required length of materials at that time, this initial pattern resulted in a significant amount of leftover material.
Regarding future versions of the knitting pattern:
Subsequent versions have been improved to minimize the amount of excess material by adjusting the length of the materials. However, it's sometimes necessary to trim the ends of the materials during threading and insertion processes. Therefore, a certain amount of extra length is required. If you still wish to reduce the amount of leftover material, you can adjust the number of stitches. We encourage you to experiment with adjusting the pattern to find the optimal number of stitches.
Regarding splicing:
For this main body part, splicing materials mid-process is considered a 'production error,' and therefore we do not plan to modify the current version of the pattern unless there are exceptional circumstances.
Regarding material symbols and numbers:
You may be wondering why symbols and numbers are written on the leftover materials, but they are not shown on the work process images. This is because we have removed them beforehand to avoid distractions during the work process. When creating this or new pieces in the future, we recommend writing clear markings on both ends of the materials. This will make it easier to visualize how each material is incorporated and streamline the process.
Summary:
Compared to the initial version of the pattern, subsequent versions of this piece should have significantly reduced the amount of leftover material. However, if you want to create the piece with even less material, you can make the process more efficient by adjusting the number of stitches or writing markings on both ends of the materials.

Closing and review

Closing
Congratulations on completing the Body Parts for your knitting project, "PROTOTYPE8: SEVEN SQUARES." We can imagine how satisfying it must feel to have knitted all the way down to the bottom of the piece.
We apologize for the lack of images during the production process, which made it difficult to provide clear explanations to everyone. However, we believe that you were able to understand the process of creating the rhombus lattice pattern body using the Fortuna Ami technique, which transforms a flat pattern into a three-dimensional form.
Production Highlights and Future Outlook
Fortuna Ami: This is the most crucial technique used in this project. By mastering this knitting method, you can create various three-dimensional rhombus lattice pattern pieces.
Material Utilization: The remaining materials can be used for the Handle Parts to create a more unique piece. We will provide separate instructions on how to create the Handle Parts.
Sense of Achievement and New Goals: We're sure you're feeling a great sense of accomplishment as the piece nears completion. At the same time, we imagine you may have new goals, such as wanting to create a more three-dimensional look or adjust the density when assembling the pieces.
What You Gain Through Knitting
Through creating this piece, we believe you've acquired fundamental knitting skills and gained confidence in completing a project from start to finish. Knitting is a deep and multifaceted craft, with a wide range of techniques and expressive possibilities. We encourage you to continue exploring various projects using the experience you've gained.
Knitting also helps cultivate concentration and patience. Counting stitches and learning new knitting techniques require focus, while completing a project demands perseverance. We're sure you've developed these skills through creating this piece.
Summary
Knitting is a very enjoyable craft that allows you to create your own unique pieces. We hope you will continue to explore various projects using the experience you've gained.
This process is complete.
