【Prototype】Fortuna Pearl 21mm Width: Accessory Case Inspired by Kakunodate's Cherry Blossoms

  • This piece is the inaugural accessory case prototype crafted by "Alaudae Japan"*using Fortuna Pearl
    It is luxuriously crafted using "Fortuna Pearl (21mm width)," a material characterized by its silky smooth texture and elegant, pearl-like luster, with color tones designed to evoke the image of the Cherry Blossoms (Sakura) of local Kakunodate.

【Body Design】

  • Material: Fortuna Pearl 21mm width
  • Size: Approximately 18.5 cm wide x 6.5 cm deep x 7.8 cm high. The size is convenient and suitable for placing on a desk or shelf.
  • Design: Features soft color combinations reminiscent of Kakunodate's cherry blossoms. By utilizing Fortuna Pearl's rich color variations, it is also possible to create textures with the deep finish of the traditional craft, Kabazaiku (Cherry Bark Work).

Making Story

In late January 2019, after resuming serious handwork, this is the very first piece I completed. It is a one-of-a-kind prototype that marks the origin of this brand's journey through challenges and learning.

The original goal was to see how 21mm-wide material would turn out, and I began making it as a Nordic-style small case. Partway through, I ran into an unexpected accident: the strap material was not long enough. Determined not to waste any material, I quickly changed the design and finished it through to the end.

Basket weaving had been on pause for three to four years, and the sudden material shortage demanded improvisation. Since I had to unravel what I had already woven and reuse the material for the new design, a few rough spots remain. I see those imperfections as proof of the trial and error of my early days. This piece also taught me what a 21mm-wide case actually looks and feels like, knowledge that has carried into every project since.

This small case is the deeply meaningful starting point from which all my subsequent work began.
