【Prototype】Fortuna Pearl 6mm Width: A Bag of Delicate Luster and Geometric Patterns
- This piece is a prototype luxuriously crafted using "Fortuna Pearl (6mm width)," a material characterized by its silky smooth texture*and elegant, pearl-like luster.
The main body utilizes the narrow 6mm material*and combines Harlequin Check*and Diagonal Check (Ichimatsu Check)*patterns, expressing a geometric pattern that is both delicate and three-dimensional through a unique method.
【Body Design】
- Material: Fortuna Pearl 6mm width
- Size: Designed with dimensions of 29 squares wide x 10 squares deep x 22 squares high (based on dot rows). The size secures a capacity suitable for daily use, despite the narrow material width.
- Design: The narrowness of the material allows the geometric patterns to exhibit a more intricate and delicate appearance.
【Handle Specifications】
- Material: Woven with Fortuna Pearl 4mm width material in the same color as the main body.
- Feature: Using the same glossy material as the body adds a sense of unity and premium quality to the overall look.
- Attachment: Firmly secured with φ 9 double-sided rivets, balancing both design aesthetic and durability.

Making Story
This prototype began from curiosity: how would a checkered pattern look when woven with very narrow strapping?
The result was that for my skill level at the time (August 2019), weaving narrow strapping while keeping the gaps small enough to form a clean checkered pattern was simply not possible. The experience taught me a lesson I needed to relearn: rather than insisting on what you cannot do, advance steadily with what you can. Partway through, I prioritized renovating the website (relaunched on August 13, 2020), and the piece ended up sitting unfinished for about a year.
But that pause led to a real technical breakthrough. When I returned to the work, I developed a new handle that combines 12-strand round weaving, 6-strand weaving, and flat weaving. This handle takes full advantage of Fortuna Pearl's soft texture, and at the same time I established a structure for anchoring the handle firmly at the point where it branches off from the body.
For the inner core of the handle, I adopted transparent vinyl hose (Φ10mm outer diameter), normally used as a handle cover for PP bands. I then ran the rivets through that core to secure them, which significantly reinforced the handle's strength. It is the kind of method anyone could think of, yet nobody actually does. The piece took time to complete, but it became a meaningful step toward making future work both more enjoyable and more refined.
This prototype was not put up for sale; after the description was posted online, I gave it as a gift to someone who has been a great help to me, as a token of my appreciation.
