【Prototype】Fortuna Pearl 7mm Width: A Geometric Pattern Bag Expressed with Narrow Material
- This piece is a prototype luxuriously crafted using "Fortuna Pearl (7mm width)," a material characterized by its silky smooth texture and elegant, pearl-like luster.
The main body utilizes the narrow 7mm material and combines Harlequin Check and Diagonal Check (Ichimatsu Check) patterns, expressing a geometric pattern that is both delicate and three-dimensional through a unique method.
【Body Design】
- Material: Fortuna Pearl 7mm width
- Size: Designed with dimensions of 25 squares wide x 8 squares deep x 20 squares high (based on dot rows). The dimensions are well-balanced, considering practicality despite using a narrow material./li>
- Design: The narrowness of the material allows the geometric patterns to exhibit a more intricate and delicate appearance, while the luster enhances the elegance.
【Handle Specifications】

Making Story
This prototype began with a simple question: what would happen if I wove a checkered pattern with very narrow strapping?
The answer was that for my skill level at the time (August 2019), weaving narrow strapping while keeping the gaps small enough to form a clear checkered pattern was extremely difficult. I came away with a renewed understanding of a basic principle of craft: rather than fixating on what you cannot do, start with what you can. Then, partway through, I prioritized rebuilding the website (relaunched on August 13, 2020), which meant the piece sat unfinished for about a year.
But that pause turned out to bring an unexpected breakthrough. When I returned to the work, I came up with a new idea for the handle, combining 12-strand round weaving, 6-strand weaving, and flat weaving. This handle style is only possible because of the soft texture of Fortuna Pearl.
For the inner core of the handle, I used transparent vinyl hose (Φ10mm outer diameter), normally used as a handle cover for PP bands. I then ran the rivets through that core to secure them, which significantly reinforced the handle's strength. It is the kind of method anyone could think of yet nobody seems to actually try. That single small idea has made the work ahead feel far more inviting.
This prototype took a long time to complete, but it produced many lessons and new ideas, and it is brimming with promise for what comes next. The piece was not put up for sale; after the description was posted online, I gave it as a gift to someone who has been a great help to me, as a token of my appreciation.
