Design & Craft

  • This piece is a prototype crafted using "Fortuna Pearl (15mm width)," a material characterized by its silky smooth texture and beautiful, pearl-like luster.

Commitment to Design and Specifications

【Body Design】

  • Material: Fortuna Pearl 15mm width
  • Size: Designed with 12 squares wide (W) × 5 squares deep (D) × 9 squares high (H). As a prototype, we pursued a size and stability that utilized the characteristics of the material.
  • Design: The glossy pearl material highlights the geometric patterns, which show various expressions depending on the viewing angle.

【Original Handle】

This handle is an original, special specification by "Alaudae Japan."

  • Unique Technique: The "Edge Stitch" weaving method was developed and adopted. This allowed us to realize a unique, first-of-its-kind idea of adding a matching color edge stitch to the entire handle.
  • Specifications: Total length of 50 cm, approximately 20–22 mm wide. Secured firmly with eight rivets, achieving both aesthetic design and high durability.

We believe this description clearly conveys the product's material feel, the complexity of its design, and the originality of the handle. If you have any other information or questions regarding this prototype, please feel free to ask.

Making Story

No matter how good the material, if there is no concrete sense of how to use it or how much is needed, no one will reach for it. That realization led me to make it a priority in future prototypes to clearly state the approximate amount of material required. This Prototype Hachi (Eight) 9-mass uses 15mm-wide material, and its purpose was to find the maximum body size based on the Origin Nana shape.

Working from a newly drafted 15mm weaving diagram, I learned the following. The maximum body size is 9 cells tall (19.1cm) by 12 cells wide (25.2cm), with a 5-cell depth (10.5cm). The material needed for the body is two rolls of 15mm-wide, 27m-each material, totaling 54m. Please note that this 54m is for the body only; the handle requires additional material.

To make good use of leftover material, I came up with a new technique I call edging stitch. I first tried 21mm-wide material as the handle core, but the finished width after stitching (about 25 to 27mm) felt a bit wide for a man's hand. After trial and error I switched the core to 15mm-wide material, which gave a handle width of about 20 to 22mm and felt just right. I also discovered that layering two pieces of handle core makes the edging stitch weaving much easier. That makes it possible to combine colors, for instance Momohanairo (001F-15009) on the outside and Sekichikuiro (001F-15008) on the inside. For the inner reinforcement and decoration, I deliberately reused 21mm-wide edging stitch, so the difference from the optimal handle width can be compared side by side.

This Prototype Hachi (Eight) 9-mass is more than a check on sizing. It produced a brand-new technique, edging stitch, woven with the same material, and it became the starting point for the name Fortuna Weave, a general term for the growing variety of weaves to come. Being able to draw out the hidden possibilities of Fortuna material is a great joy for me. Only one piece was made.
