About Handles - What Would You Like to Know?

さっそくですが、みなさんに聞きたいことがあります。

私は、自分でアイデアを出して考えるのが大好きです。
持ち手についても、あれこれ試してきました。
編み込む形、革を合わせる形、芯を入れる方法、そのための治具。
気がつけば、ずいぶん遠くまで来ていました。

ただ、正直に言いますと ——
他の方が持ち手の「何」で困っているのか、私はまったく知りません。

作り方を知りたいのか。
道具の話が聞きたいのか。
それとも、そもそも「どの持ち手が自分の作品に合うのか」で迷っているのか。
ここが分からないまま私が書きはじめると、
たぶん、誰も知りたくなかったことを延々と説明してしまいます。


▼ たとえば、こんな方向があります

1. 一般的な編み方
   　本体から続けて編み出す持ち手、別に編んで取り付ける持ち手など。

2. 強度と使い心地
   　荷物を入れると伸びる、付け根が裂ける、手に食い込む。
   　この手の悩みは、作り方より先に原因の話が要ります。

3. 治具（じぐ）のこと
   　どこで手に入るのか。自分で作れるのか。作るなら何が必要か。

4. 革やパーツを合わせる
   　PPバンド以外の素材と組み合わせるときの留め方、選び方。

5. デザインとして
   　かごの形に対して、持ち手の太さや高さをどう決めるか。


▼ ひと言だけでも助かります

「3が知りたい」でも、
「持ち手の付け根がいつも裂けます」でも、
「まだ何も分からないので、最初の一歩から」でも大丈夫です。

いま作っているものの写真があれば、なお話が早くなります。

こうして教えていただけると、私も出しやすくなります。
順番に、ひとつずつ書いていきます。

Let me start with a question for all of you.

I love coming up with ideas and working them out on my own.
Handles are no exception. Over the years I have tried all sorts
of things: handles woven straight out of the body, handles
combined with leather, ways of hiding a core inside, and the
jigs that make those possible. Before I knew it, I had wandered
quite far down that road.

But here is the honest truth:
I have no idea what part of handles other people struggle with.

Do you want to learn how to weave them?
Are you curious about the tools?
Or are you still wondering which kind of handle would even suit
your basket in the first place?
If I start writing without knowing this, I will probably spend
pages explaining things nobody wanted to hear.


Some directions this could take:

1. General weaving methods
   Handles woven as a continuation of the body, handles woven
   separately and attached afterwards, and so on.

2. Strength and comfort
   The handle stretches when the bag is loaded, the base tears,
   the strap digs into your hand. For these, we need to talk
   about causes before we talk about methods.

3. Jigs
   Where to get them, whether you can make one yourself, and
   what you would need if you did.

4. Combining leather and other parts
   How to choose and attach materials other than PP band.

5. Handles as design
   How to decide the thickness and height of a handle to suit
   the shape of the basket.

Even a single line helps.

"Number 3, please" is enough. So is "the base of my handle
always tears", or "I know nothing yet, so please start from
the very beginning". If you have a photo of what you are
working on, that will make things even faster.

Once I know what you are looking for, it becomes much easier
for me to share what I have. I will write it up one piece
at a time.
