Making Story

This is Pearl Prototype Two, woven in a harlequin check (checkered) pattern using 15mm-wide Fortuna Pearl.

I made it because products using 15mm-wide material are common in Japan, and I felt that mastering this width was essential. To see the difference from the 21mm-wide Pearl Prototype One I had already made, I added two more dot columns horizontally to this prototype. In theory, the material should just need to be longer in proportion to those two extra columns, but craftwork rarely follows pure arithmetic. I made Pearl Prototype Two precisely to discover the extra length that calculation alone could not give me.

For personal reasons, I had to leave the work for two months. When I picked it up again, I had forgotten the steps so completely that I panicked, unable to make progress. Strangely, the very next day it came back to me as if I had never paused, which gave the piece special meaning for me.

The key takeaway from this prototype was that adjustments to width cannot rely on calculation alone; making a prototype is what actually allows you to tune it. A single piece, this prototype taught me both the path toward mastering a technique and the importance of experience beyond what numbers can predict.
