Making Story
This is Pearl Prototype Four, woven in a harlequin check, or diagonal check (checkered) pattern using 15mm-wide Fortuna Pearl.
My original plan was to reproduce the size of the 21mm-wide Pearl Prototype One in 15mm and on top of that try out a folding-outward technique. The ending refused to come together, however, and the appearance ended up worse rather than better. To avoid wasting the material, I worked it through, and the result is the distinctive pattern you see now. Happily, the inside of the bag came out as a clean, even checkered pattern.
The greatest gain from Pearl Prototype Four was learning, by accident, one specification for weaving a different style of checkered pattern.
Given how it turned out, I had thought it would be hard to sell as a prototype, but my mom kindly said she wanted it, so I gave it to her as a gift. Each time she carries it, her recurring comment gives me fresh insight: I wish it were one or two sizes bigger. I had made it without worrying about size, purely to test the technique, but for everyday use it really is too small. A valuable piece of feedback.
A single piece that brought me both a technical lesson and important feedback about product size.
