Making Story
This is Pearl Prototype Three, woven in a harlequin check, or diagonal check (checkered) pattern using 15mm-wide Fortuna Pearl. This is now my fourth checkered-pattern project, and I can feel my technique becoming smoother, though I always approach each prototype with a clear goal in mind.
This time the focus was the transition in the height-direction dot columns. Every previous prototype ended at a half row of dots at the top, leaving awkward heights like 8.5 or 9.5 cells. So this time I concentrated on the work and took great care to avoid finishing with a half row at the top.
What I noticed upon finishing is that even within the same top edge, the finish can take on different characters. I lack the proper terminology to convey it cleanly, but the joint, the closing seam, or the fold at the two ends of the top each take on distinct properties. These differences look like an important clue for future work, particularly when it comes to raising the overall finish quality of a bag.
A single piece in which attention to fine detail revealed the key to the next stage of technique.
