The Challenge of 15mm Width and the Wall of Calculation

  • Motivation: Since many products in Japan use 15mm width material, mastering the manufacturing technique for this width was deemed essential.
  • Prototype Goal: To see the difference from the previously made "Pearl Prototype One" (21mm width), I attempted the prototype by increasing the horizontal dot rows by two.
  • Logically, one would assume that increasing the material length simply by the calculated width of two rows should suffice, but manufacturing is not always that straightforward. Therefore, this "Pearl Prototype Two" was made to determine the "extra length required" that cannot be obtained through calculation alone.

Wrestling with Memory and the Big Takeaway

  • Due to personal reasons, a two-month gap occurred in the production period. Upon resuming, I completely forgot the working procedure and fell into a panicked situation where I couldn't proceed. Yet, strangely, the next day I was able to continue as if I had suddenly remembered everything, making this a very memorable prototype.
  • The result of this prototype was the crucial realization that adjusting horizontal width, etc., is possible through prototyping, not just relying on calculation.
