The Life-Changing First Challenge: Pearl Prototype One (21mm Width *Ichimatsu* Check)

  • In February 2019, I was deeply impressed by a Harlequin Check (diagonal check, or *Ichimatsu* pattern) announced by an overseas fashion manufacturer on Twitter. This inspiration led to my first attempt at the *Ichimatsu* pattern with "Pearl Prototype One," created using 21mm width Fortuna Pearl material.

Initial Hurdle and Ingenuity

Applying the *Ichimatsu* pattern across the entire bag proved difficult with my rudimentary skill level at the time. However, by innovating with the base, I managed to bring the overall shape together successfully.

  • Exterior: The exterior was rendered with the *Ichimatsu* pattern, except for the area around the lower base.
  • Interior: Since this was my first production, the inside was finished with the *Ichimatsu* pattern by piecing together the material.

Handle Challenge and Ensuring Strength

  • For the handle, I went through various trials and decided to use genuine leather, secured with double-sided rivets.
  • Because the material was thick, I was concerned that fixing it with $\phi 12$ rivets might result in insufficient strength. I solved this lack of strength by crushing the inner rivet part to secure it firmly. I expect the finish of the genuine leather handles and the rivet fixing will improve with future skill development.

Size Impression and Durability

  • The total weight is approximately 340g. It is difficult to determine whether this is light or heavy for this size, but I personally believe it is reasonable for use in enjoying fashion.
  • To be frank, the durability is unknown. I assume it will be fine unless handled extremely roughly. Furthermore, the material, excluding the genuine leather and double-riveted handle parts, is 100% polypropylene, making washing or wiping with water possible.

What the Prototype Delivered

  • Coming up with the idea for this prototype and actually creating it—I never imagined it would change my way of life. This experience solidified my passion for craftsmanship thereafter.
  • This prototype was created as a record of a momentous challenge, a one-of-a-kind piece.
